Spring 2010 Audio Book
Ages: 8 & Up
CD Price: $19.99
When the story opens, twelve-year-old Claudia plans to run away. As the oldest of three children-and the only girl-she resents having to help with family chores while her two younger brothers get away with doing nothing. It's just one example of what Claudia considers to be the "injustice" inflicted on her on a regular basis. So, she saves her allowance and decides to run off to New York City-not forever, she says, but just long enough for her family to develop "Claudia appreciation." Before long she and her middle sibling, Jamie, end up on the adventure of their lives, an adventure where they get "mixed-up" in mysteries about sculptures, Michelangelo, and the renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art. Konigsburg's story is great fun for fans of other art-mystery books, such as Chasing Vermeer, and movies such as Night at the Museum. This novel precedes them both and helped set the stage for the works that followed; the CD, read by Oscar-nominee Jill Clayburgh, will win a new generation of fans. It's by turns funny and suspenseful and as an audio book would be wonderful for family roadtrips.

Note: From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler received the Newbery Medal in 1968. This review is based on the audiobook version.
