The Penguins of Madagascar

The Penguins of Madagascar

Spring 2010 Television
Ages: 6 - 11 yrs.
Network: Nickelodeon
Review:
In this Nickelodeon cartoon derived from the popular Madagascar feature films, Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private are four macho penguins living in the Central Park Zoo. These penguins, who believe they are an elite strike force team, boast tough commando skills and a secret headquarters.

They usually butt heads with King Julien, the lemur who believes he rules all. The charm of the series lies in the fact that these tough guys always seem to get into a jam and then get out of it with kindness, friendship and a lot of heart.

For example, in one episode, the four penguins are told that one of them is a female. They do DNA testing and Skipper comes up as a girl. It raises many questions about what girls wear, what girls are capable of and how girls act. In the end, he realizes that girls can be tough, smart problem-solvers. And he finds he has character traits that aren't specific to gender, but to his personality.

Overall, the show provides humor with grace and always with a good message.
