The Backyardigans

Spring 2010 Television
Ages: 2 - 5 yrs.
Network: Nickelodeon
Review:
Nick, Jr., presents The Backyardigans, a CGI-animated series aimed at children between the ages of 2 and 5. The cast includes five friends - colorful animal-like characters with ethnically sensitive names and traits. Their adventures begin the way all truly memorable moments of childhood should: They meet up to play in the shared backyard that connects their homes, and soon imagination transforms simple play into inspired adventures.

There's a lot of music and dance to elevate the energy level, and their cheerful interactions model healthy friendships. Storylines take them to new worlds and different time periods and along the way, the Backyardigans share, collaborate, take turns, and tackle a task that teaches real life lessons. Whether they pick up litter or practice manners, plots are paced just right to keep kids' interest.

The Backyardigans is bright, colorful and offers unexpected sight gags sure to get kids giggling (e.g. a Musketeer-themed adventure has them fencing with balloon swords). An especially nice added touch is that each episode features a particular genre of music, ranging from polka to rap. Every episode ends with another favorite moment of childhood: A bunch of happily exhausted kids running inside the house for a snack.

The Backyardigans offers a lot of innocent charm for young viewers and interesting musical interludes that distinguish it from other talking-animal-adventure programs. It's very likely that when TV time is over, little viewers will want to run outside to play and imagine new adventures in their own backyards.
