Review:
Go Diego Go! is an animated series for kids ages 2 to 5, a 2005 spin-off of the hugely popular Nickelodeon series Dora the Explorer. Diego is Dora's older cousin, and his mission is to help animals in peril. Many of his assignments take place in the rainforest, but it's not unusual to find him snowboarding in Antarctica to save a polar bear. As the opening theme song says, Diego's a "rough and tough adventurer" and he's willing to travel to any corner of the world where an animal needs his help.

While storylines are based on factual data about the environment and endangered species, the program takes a lot of creative liberties when it comes to the cast. Diego's sidekick is a talking jungle cat named Baby Jaguar, and he also gets plenty of assistance from Rescue Pack, a helpful bag that can transform into a jet-ski or a skateboard at the drop of a hat. Click (voiced by actress Rosie Perez) is a talking camera with super audio and video capabilities, and many of the animals in need of rescuing not only talk, they also sing.

Go Diego Go! has a relaxed pace, providing plenty of time for its content to resonate with young viewers. The program offers age-appropriate themes of conservation as well as interesting glimpses into other cultures, and Diego frequently talks directly to the viewers, encouraging them to repeat key words or mimic his actions. If your child displays an interest in wildlife, Go Diego Go! is a good program to further that interest while also explaining humans' role in assuring their survival.
