Review:
Baldness seems like the least of your problems when you are facing leukemia. For the young patients featured in Locks of Love: The Kindest Cut, the extra boost of self esteem from a flowing head of hair can sometimes make all the difference. Face it; hair can be a big part of self-image. Broadway musicals have been created in praise of hair, and billions of dollars are spent on the coiffing, upkeep and advertising of hair products. This HBO documentary looks at people, mostly young girls, who have lost their locks to disease and also at the people (again, mostly young girls) who donate the song inspired "long beautiful hair, Shining, gleaming, Streaming, flaxen, waxen" hair to them. Started in 1997 by a mom trying to bring solace to her young daughter with Alopecia, Locks of Love is non-profit organization that now receives tons of hair every week. Through this special, viewers learn just how much real hair is needed to make realistic wigs and the multi-stepped process it takes to make them fit and flow like one's own. Included are clips of home videos of the many donors, including a group of female prisoners, as well as in-depth interviews with kids who receive the finished product. Touching and informative, this documentary serves as a great follow-up for those who've already participated in the program and is an inspiration for those going through hair loss and those who want to help.
