Review:

The steeple of Big Ben soars into the night sky, as chimes ring out over the city of London. Four children fly by through the clouds. Those familiar with J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan will know they are on their way to Neverland.

Jumping straight into the action is a clever opening for a new pop-up edition of this beloved classic. Fans of the original version can rest assured that in her adaptation of the story, Libby Hamilton quickly brings the reader up to speed on the details of how Wendy, John and Michael Darling came to embark on this moonlit adventure with Peter Pan.

The book is enhanced throughout by multiple sound effects. The cackling laughter of Captain Hook’s pirates contrasts with the gentle sound of oars rippling through a lagoon. Near the Jolly Roger pirate ship, the ominous tick-tock of an infamous crocodile signals impending danger.

Watercolor illustrations by Paul Hess are created with an artist’s eye for unusual perspectives that works effectively with paper engineering and design by Andy Mansfield.
