Review:

The Best of Lomax, The Hound of Music is a PBS series based on John M. Feierabend First Steps in Music curriculum rooted in authentic American folk songs. The series is a unique blend of puppetry, live action, and CGI effects. Hound dog Lomax and his kitty pal Delta (both puppets) live with their owner Amy in the caboose of a steam train called the "Melody Hound Express." Together, they travel in search of songs that illustrate our country's musical traditions, and storylines are built specifically around skits that spotlight regional music and the origin of popular songs.

Explanations about a song's origins, while enlightening, are short and simple, just right for the recommended viewing ages 3 - 7. The program also incorporates maps to show Lomax's route as he tracks down songs, promoting simple geography skills. On top of that, the program provides a great way to point out to kids the diversity of cultures and customs within our own country.

Amy and friends frequently treat viewers to rousing musical performances, and often they use a clever kind of "call and response" technique so little kids can sing along. From time to time, characters also demonstrate the regional dances linked to a particular song, and of course, viewers are encouraged to dance too.

The Best of Lomax, The Hound of Music is all high-energy and good fun without feeling frenetic. In fact, don't be surprised if some of the folk songs become as popular and requested as the nursery songs and childhood classics you already sing with your kids.
