Working in the garden with her mother, a little girl imagines how her own garden could be improved. She doesn't like carrots, so in her garden the carrots will be invisible. She does like strawberries, so in her garden the strawberries will glow like lanterns. The rabbits hopping through her garden will be made of chocolate. In her garden, flowers don't die; they change colors when she thinks they should. And when she plants seashells, they will grow and produce more seashells.

At day's end, when her mother asks her what she's been doing, she replies, "Oh nothing, just working in the garden." On the end page there is a small picture of a planted seashell sending out roots.

Kevin Henkes' illustrations are marvelously suited for this extraordinary garden.
