Review:

Born with cerebral palsy, ten-year-old Melody can't walk or walk. She can only make sounds. Although she is brilliant, her inability to communicate leaves her imprisoned and ignored. Wheelchair bound, she attends school where she is treated as mentally as well as physically disabled

Melody's parents and her next-door neighbor, Mrs. Violet Valencia, better known as "Mrs. V" with whom Melody spends her afternoons, are they only ones who believe in Melody. None of them, however, knows how smart she is. Not even her doctors believe she can learn. When Melody is assigned an aide named Catherine, Melody is able to convince Catherine that she needs a computer to talk. After research, a great effort and a lot of red-tape, the "Medi-Talker" arrives, and Melody's life changes.

Never maudlin, this is an absorbing account of an intelligent, insightful, and spirited girl. Her severe physical limitations prohibit her from saving her little sister from an accident. Her intelligence does not protect her from the heartbreak of her classmates' response. This is not a treatise about a child with a disability. It is simply a stellar story.
