Volcano is smaller than the volcanoes around her. Volcano speaks in the first person explaining that although "I'm a little sleepy now, but when I wake up, watch out! I throw nasty tantrums." That's how poet Lisa Westberg Peters premise instructs young reader/listeners about volcanoes.

Based on a volcano in Hawaii, the book follows Volcano, and the effects her eruption has on the flora and fauna surrounding her. There are pages of poems from the ferns and the lava flow crickets. The lava flow crickets will particularly appeal to children as they "text message" each other - complete with text symbols and acronyms. Jenkins' stunning cut paper collages balance the cheerful nature of the poems.
