In book one of Andrew Clements' new series, we're introduced to sixth-grader Benjamin Pratt and the mystery surrounding his New England school. The setting is Edgewater, Massachusetts, a seaside town full of long-standing secrets. The school was founded over two-hundred years ago by a sea captain. From that day, it has been guarded by janitors, bringing new meaning to the word "custodian". Ben and his friend Jill are drawn into this mysterious past, and they embark on an adventure that may determine the fate of the school itself. The audio version is a brisk two and one-half hours, read by Keith Nobbs with youthful enthusiasm. Clements follows a familiar quest-story structure, and the ending leaves the door wide open for follow-up books. His plot details and characters are engaging, making this a sound start to what promises to be an absorbing series.
