Review:

Percussionist and composer Cory Hills, creator of the Percussive Art of Storytelling outreach program, performs a variety of layered percussive soundscapes-using all manner of cowbells and blocks, gongs, drums and rhythmic vocals-to punctuate, frame and illustrate adaptations of original and classic multicultural tall tales. Among these innovative tracks are "Njovu," based on Rudyard Kipling's "How the Elephant Got His Long Trunk"; "Tikki Tikki Tembo," a retelling of a Chinese folktale; and "Phonetic Punctuation," Hills' tribute to the unique comic talents of pianist Victor Borge. The title track, explains Hills in the interesting liner notes, was inspired by works originally intended as an improvisational, avant-garde series, until the composer realized that he could hear the sound of a bicycle in his percussion.
