Review:

Lisa Redfern is a singer-songwriter who grew up in Maine and relocated to Northern California in 1996. Her parents were closely involved in the 60's folk revival. She is a San Francisco Bay Area based writing, who performs nationally while still performing and teaching locally. Sing Me Goodnight is her second lullaby album, and it is an instant hit, with thirteen mostly traditional tunes presented in a gentle and soothing manner. Lisa Redfern possesses a strong, melodic voice, with shadings of Joan Baez, Judy Collins and early Joni Mitchell, evident. The album begins with the soothing "Sail, Bay, Sail," and continues in a soft, gentle fashion with standards such as "Down in the Valley," "Hush Little Baby," "Tell Me Why," and the classic folk ballad "Riddle Song." She also performs two fine, Mary Kelly penned numbers; including "Don't You Worry," and the achingly beautiful "Goodnight, Someone." Also of note are two self-penned songs; "Sleep Baby Sleep" adds new lyrics to a traditional melody, while "Waiting for You" is a deeply personal and moving tale of Redfern's journey to adoption. The album concludes with a delicious a capella rendition of the lullaby "Peace." Sing Me Goodnight is a gentle, lovely and healing album that is a wonderful retreat from the day's craziness.
