Silly Biz: Hans Mayer FavoritesFall 2010 Music
Singer/songwriter Hans Mayer is best known to adults from his touring and recording partnership with Native American singer Bill Miller. Silly Biz: Hans Mayer Favorites is his eleventh album for children and it is a cornucopia of twenty-two delightful songs for younger children. Mayer has a gentle, expressive voice, and his songs are light and fun, with memorable lyrics and melodies. He also has quirky sense of humor and delivery reminiscent of Loudon Wainwright III. Among the album's many standouts are "The Ant's Picnic," the very silly "God Bless my Underwear," the delightfully scary "Monsters," and the random ragtime of "Extraneous Noises." There's also a cool little Sci-Fi tune in "Captain Courageous," a lilting instrumental in the lovely "Rain of Fawn Lake," the squirmy "Wiggle Worm," and a librarian's delight in "Reading Really Rocks." Each of the songs are short, precise snippets of fun for children, including "When I'm Feeling Silly," the sweet "Just a Little Hug," and the open range holler of "The Neighborhood Cowboy." Several tracks give a taste of Mayer's live shows, including "My Brother Eats Bugs," and the outrageous ode to how not to treat your childcare provider in "Baby Sitter." With superior production, musicianship, songwriting, singing and playing, Hans Mayer offers admirable children's entertainment.
