Review:

The National Geographic Earth Lab Environmental Science Kit by Thames and Kosmos teaches children about the earth's current environmental problems and what sustainable practices can do to overcome them. The kit utilizes hands-on experiments and learning in order to give children a concrete understanding of abstract ideas and concepts. The material and experiments are divided into five sections: renewable energies, natural resource usage, climate change prevention, waste and water management, and energy conservation.

The kit includes most items necessary to complete forty experiments: a full-color manual with experiments and scientific information, die-cut cardboard, paper sheet, thermometer, motor, solar cell, compass, magnifying lens, impeller wheel, drive axle, wooden stick, aluminum cup, clothespin, water filter column, garden cress seeds, petri dish, thick copper wire, ice cube tray, measuring cup, balloon, fabric netting, funnel, black paper, white paper, battery clip, spool of wire, sandpaper, drinking straw, and a polystyrene disk. Several additional items are required, however, they are easily found around most homes and offices.

The Sustainable Earth Lab Environmental Science Kit teaches children about today's pertinent environmental issues and what can be done to solve them. In general, children learn about the scientific method, experimentation and many crucial scientific skills such as following of directions, logical reasoning, hypothesizing, observing and recording phenomena, and measuring. It also gives children a base knowledge of scientific vocabulary and tools. And the kit does this in an engaging manner that makes kids care about their planet's future.
