Hardcover Price: $17.99

Tad Hills' new picture book is aimed squarely at beginning readers. Like Rocket, his furry protagonist, young children who are learning to read suddenly discover that they are immersed in language, and that words are all around them. Rocket's story captures this excitement. With a yellow bird for a teacher, Rocket learns "all of the wondrous, mighty, gorgeous alphabet," and he begins to put letters together in meaningful ways. Rocket is so motivated to learn, that even when his teacher flies south for the winter he continues to practice on his own, writing letters in the snow with his paws. Hills' oil and colored pencil illustrations are fresh and endearing, and there is a nice incorporation of spelling into the text. This is a sweet story to share with little ones.
