Review:

This alphabet book by Quiara Alegría Hudes has a decidedly urban flavor, depicting a day in the life of a lively Latino neighborhood. The story follows Ava as she gives a friend a tour of what makes her neighborhood special, from the street musicians to the shops to the delicious smells wafting from someone's kitchen. Hudes celebrates the community and the people who live there, without shying away from the grittier side of city life. For example, "B is for the bottles / that are smashed like falling stars"; or "Q is for quemar, to burn a / house to the ground beneath," making the row of buildings resemble "a smile that's / missing its two front teeth." In spite of this adversity, the overall impression of Ava's neighborhood is positive. Shiro Arihara's illustrations help, painting a picture of a bustling, energetic city, where bright colors are tinged with concrete shades.
