The Day The Music Stopped

Spring 2011 DVD
Ages: 2 - 5 yrs.
Publisher: The Juno Company
DVD Price: $17.99

Created by classical composer and Emmy-award winner Belinda Takahashi, Ph.D, The Day the Music Stopped is part of the Juno Jr. series of products focusing on music education and appreciation for young people. The Day the Music Stopped presents a clever storyline that helps kids recognize not only the beauty of composed music but also of the magic in everyday sounds.

This 60-minute DVD targets viewers ages two to five, offering puppet characters that interact in a vibrant world that is part constructed set and part computer animation. In The Day the Music Stopped, a little girl named Juno takes her baby brother Rai-Rai to the magical world of Harmonia Springs just as a technical snafu with a new "Shush Machine" accidentally silences all of the sounds around town. Not only does the singing stop; so do all the bird chirps, train chug-a-chugs, and babbling brooks!

The characters (and viewers) learn an interesting lesson about melody, harmony and rhythm as Juno and the others work to restore the music and natural musical sounds around them. The storyline is smart and entertaining - but it's the original music that steals the show, including a frog quartet singing harmony that stands out as one of the most genuinely entertaining musical performances you're likely to hear in any children's program, period!

The DVD includes some special features, such as sing-along options for English, Spanish, and French; Q&A reinforcing the music appreciation lessons learned in the program; and Language Flash Cards with three different language pronunciations.

The Day the Music Stopped certainly is likely to help kids cultivate broader musical tastes and while each selection is distinct in its musical genre, all are appropriately and pleasingly performed in a way that's just right for young viewers.
