Review:

Created by classical composer and Emmy-award winner Belinda Takahashi, Ph.D, One Bunny Band is part of the Juno Jr. series of products focusing on music education and appreciation for young people. Jacket copy quotes Takahashi's wish "for all children to be surrounded by beautiful and interesting sounds" - and One Bunny Band is a great start.

This 60-minute DVD targets little viewers ages two to five, and it offers a surprising variety of musical formats all woven into the storyline of a little girl named Juno who takes her baby brother Rai-Rai to the magical world of Harmonia Springs. Using a bright and engaging blend of puppetry and animation, the plot unfolds when Bunny offers to play background music for local events, but bumbles song selections when it comes to matching the mood. The characters (and little viewers) learn a memorable lesson about tempo, dynamics, and articulation as Juno sets them straight with more appropriate song choices.

It's all very colorful and there's nice attention to detail in the puppetry, set design and animated portions of the program - but what really stands out here is the original music. There is some truly lovely music, singing and lyrics which manage to be sophisticated and age-appropriate at the same time. Other parts of the story focus on simple joyous noise - and that's a nice lesson for kids, too.

The DVD includes some special features, such as sing-along options for English, Spanish, and French; Q&A reinforcing the music appreciation lessons learned in the program; and Language Flash Cards, presenting 20 or so common pictures (trains, animals, toys, etc.) with three different language pronunciations.

One Bunny Band is sure to broaden your kids' exposure to new musical formats and don't be surprised if you find yourself suggesting the DVD just so you can hear all that beautiful music again!
