Review:

This charming "PopOut" edition of Beatrix Potter's A Tale of Peter Rabbit is fantastic. Fans of the original version published in 1902 will be pleased that everything--from the soft watercolor illustrations to the typeface and page layout--remains faithful to the creator's vision while introducing new technology that brings the story alive for today's children.

A helpful feature for emerging readers, each word is highlighted as it is pronounced by the narrator whose calm tempo and pleasant British accent perfectly reflect the mood of the story.

Each page holds a number of surprises to be discovered. Well-rendered illustrations are cleverly enhanced with shadows to appear 3-D. Pull-tabs and spinning wheels invite little hands to interact. As with traditional pop-up books, the moving parts are most effective when they illuminate the story: Peter slipping under the garden gate, Mr. McGregor popping out from behind the cucumber frame, the rabbits' paws lifting spoonfuls of bread, milk and blackberries at suppertime.

A couple of minor incongruities (if Peter Rabbit lives underneath a fir tree, why are maple leaves falling from the sky?) did not diminish my enjoyment of this delightful app. I would highly recommend it as a worthwhile addition to any electronic bookshelf.
