Review:

Duke Ellingtonā€¦ and More Stories to Celebrate Great Figures in African American History is a collection of four children's books, each uniquely illustrated and wonderfully narrated by celebrities Forest Whitaker, Phylicia Rashad, Billy Dee Williams, and Samuel L. Jackson. The stories include optional read-along captions, helping to build early-reading skills while also introducing the remarkable accomplishments of the featured figures. Forest Whitaker narrates Duke Ellington, which was written by Andrea Davis Pinkney and illustrated by Brian Pinkney, a story about a young boy suffering through stuffy piano lessons - until he hears an inspiring new form of music called jazz. Ellington Was Not a Street, written by Ntozake Shange and illustrated by Kadir Nelson, is both graceful and lyrical as it introduces young viewers to pivotal historical figures via Phylicia Rashad's narration. Julius Lester's John Henry, illustrated by Brian Pinkney, will excite children as they see a familiar folk ballad in a whole new way through the narration of Samuel L. Jackson. The final story in the collection is Ella Fitzgerald: The Tale of a Vocal Virtuosa, and like the others, it makes famous figures feel like accessible, everyday people whose talent and determination spurred them on to make great contribution in the arts and politics. The book was written by Andrea Davis Pinkney, illustrated by Brian Pinkney, and narrated by Billy Dee Williams. At $14.95, Duke Ellingtonā€¦ and More Stories to Celebrate Great Figures in African American History is an exceptional value and exceptional viewing for families gathered in the living room and students gathered in the classroom.
