In Nikki McClure’s lovely new picture book, everyone in town gathers for market day. Among the delicious wares are fresh-picked apples, “sweet and happy kale,” Luscious blueberry turnovers, and even handmade cloth napkins. McClure’s story is a true celebration of eating locally and supporting small farmers and artisans. In addition to describing the foods with mouth-watering detail, she devotes space to explaining all that goes into a harvest, or into making a prepared product such as smoked salmon. Furthermore, she thanks the market vendors with an appreciative refrain echoed throughout the book. The cut paper illustrations in high-contrast black and white are clean and simple, while still detailed—much like the products McClure writes about in the text. This is a wonderful tribute to the hardworking people behind farmers’ markets, and a good lesson on appreciating quality ingredients.
