Review:

"Waves of black and gold dip into the meadow," as goldfinches scatter thistle seeds to the earth. In the wild of nature, this is how gardens grow. Birds, wind, water, and even wandering hikers all help with the planting. This lovely and poetic picture book by Kathryn O. Galbraith demonstrates for young readers the many methods of seed dispersal at work on the planet. Cockleburs catch on a rabbit’s coat, and pods from Scotch broom "pop their seeds, like popcorn from a pan." The accompanying watercolor and pencil illustrations are soft, lovely, and full of realistic detail. Endpapers are also beautifully illustrated, featuring examples of many types of seeds. Galbraith includes a helpful bibliography of further reading about seeds, plants, and birds for readers who are interested in knowing more about the subject.
