Sandra Boynton’s classic tale is brought to life in the Going to Bed Book app. Although I am opposed to the idea of using technology (besides lullabies) to say goodnight to my children, I couldn’t have been more pleased with the production value and soothing nature of this digital storybook. The scene is set with the book laying softly on a child’s bed with a cozy stuffed animal neatly tucked in and ready to listen. Children can either read the story themselves or have "the big guy", Billy J. Kramer, read it to them. Kramer’s deep voice is set perfectly against an original piano composition, both the ideal backdrop for Boynton’s illustrations. Each page offers an opportunity for children to engage with the characters. For example, while the animals are taking a bath, readers may turn the water on to make bubbles that float across the screen and can be popped. Our testers’ favorite scene was when the animals brushed their teeth and the steam from the water fogged up the screen.

What makes this digital version so appealing is the way that the producers captured the restful qualities of the original book, while still offering opportunities for silly interactivity that do not go over the top. In other words, parents can feel comforted in knowing that this is one piece of technology that may help the kids ease into a restful night’s sleep, rather than rile them up.
