Troublemaker is more than just the title of Andrew Clements' new children's novel---it's also a label that follows protagonist Clay Hensley throughout his school. Clay is a classroom prankster, but his jokes and caricatures are seen in a different light when his older brother gets into serious legal trouble. Clay learns that choices made in the present can affect how others see you for a long time to come. Two related questions surface as well---Can people change, and can others believe in the authenticity of those changes? The message in the story is clear without being preachy, and Clements, a former teacher, displays his knack for finding the issues important to his young readers. Both adults and students are layered characters with inner lives, especially Clay, his brother Mitch, and the school secretary. The audio version clocks in at 2.5 hours, and is read by longtime Clements narrator Keith Nobbs. This is a highly recommended story to share with tweens and young teens, at home or in the classroom.
