Review:

Scholastic Storybook Treasures presents My First Collection Featuring Splat the Cat, a collection of fourteen storybooks for young children brilliantly brought to life through gentle animation, narration, and beautiful music.

This 3-DVD collection offers a tremendous variety in tone—from the charming and cheerful Splat the Cat, to the poignant Goose. Laura Dern narrates the latter, which is a story about a little gosling raised by a loving family of woodchucks. There’s more star-powered voice talent in Wild About Books, narrated by Catherine O’Hara; and Leo the Late-Bloomer, narrated by Mary Beth Hurt.

Additional favorites in this collection include Hondo & Fabian, Bear Snores On, The Napping House, and the childhood must-have classic Each Peach Pear Plum. DVD Special Features offer a Spanish-language version of The Story About Ping and an interview with Splat the Cat author and illustrator Rob Scotton.

All of the stories in this collection are uniquely and artfully animated—managing to convey movement and vitality while still retaining the peaceful appeal of an illustrated storybook. That’s an admirable accomplishment when so much children’s media tends to overdo it with hyper-stimulating editing, music, and special effects. My First Collection Featuring Splat the Cat strikes just the right balance to let the story content shine, amounting to more than an hour-and-a-half of mesmerizing and meaningful entertainment sure to charm your child.
