Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale is, of course, the now famous children's picture book by Mo Willems. Released by Hyperion Books in 2004 as an illustrated book, on May 8, 2010 Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical premiered at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. This original cast recording features original lyrics by Willems and music by Grammy Award winning composer Michael Silversher. The original cast included Tony Award nominee Stephanie D'Abruzzo (Kate Monster, Avenue Q) as Trixie, Michael John Casey as Dad, Erika Rose as Mom, and puppeteers Matthew McGloin and Gia Mora. The story (for the uninitiated) revolves around the character of toddler Trixie as she goes on a seemingly simple errand with her father, down the block, through the park, past the school, to the Laundromat. We see the story through the wonder of Trixie's eyes, as she experiences loading and putting money into the machine with innocent fascination. On the return home, the plot takes a turn, as she realizes that she has left her beloved stuffed bunny behind. The simple story makes the transition surprisingly well into musical form, and is very reminiscent of adaptations of Maurice Sendak's work. The songs are sweet and quite humorous since all of Trixie's dialogue and song parts are in baby talk. The CD features a handsome booklet with all the lyrics and dialogue, as well as photos from the production. Also available is a special edition of the Caldecott Honor winning story with a CD of the Original Cast Recording from the Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical, which includes a read-along track featuring the author and his daughter (at 4 years old).
