City Square Off is an easy to play, two-player, strategy game loosely designed around the premise of city planning. It consists of two 9x9 city grid playing surfaces, four starter city shapes (futuristic, modern, medieval, and ancient), two sets of twenty-one Tetris-like shapes, twenty-one shape cards, and a colorful two-page insert with rules and four game variations.

To play, each player chooses a starter city shape and places it in the center of their grid board. Players alternate drawing cards from the deck, revealing tile shapes that must be added to their city. Tiles may be placed anywhere as long as at least one side is in contact with any tile already placed on the grid. Play continues until a player can not fit a piece entirely within their city limits. If neither player can place a piece, the player with the most contiguous empty spaces wins the game.

Games are simple, fun, quick, and can be enjoyed by children of all ages. I think even children younger than the recommended minimum age of eight could play the game successfully. For extra fun and especially to challenge older players, try the four game variations described in the instructions. My kids even came up with their own game versions.

City Square Off is made of quality components. Tiles are made of sturdy, brightly colored plastic and they fit securely on the similarly made pegged grids. Shape cards are of plastic-coated stock. All game components fit in a well-designed storage box. This game will be around for a long time in this house.
