LeapPad Explorer

LeapPad Explorer

Fall 2011 Toys
Ages: 4 - 9 yrs.
Price: $99.99

No coincidence in naming this the LeapPad, is there? The look and portability are there, as is an interface easy for children to understand; the "apps" are entertaining, and overall, educational. Reading levels automatically adjust to a child's abilities. And additional content is available via cartridges or download. Not all content is created equally; some games played more smoothly than others. We were more than pleasantly surprised to see not one, but two styluses included.

Our younger testers enjoy watching the included alphabet video, and children within the age ranges enjoy the Make-Your-Own-Story App. The camera and video camera (in our opinion, among the top reasons to buy this) have sparked days of entertainment and creative play.

In our month-long testing, the device lasted through thick and thin. It made it through play testing at home and on the road. At home, testers customized the user experience (it handles up to three) and connected to LeapFrog website (USB cable is included) to update the apps and get some additional free content. It made long summer road trip a lot more manageable for the drivers. And somehow, no one complained of carsickness while using the LeapPad.
