Review:

Davis Delaware moves to a new school in the middle of freshman year with a truckload of problems. His mother has recently died and he and his father are lost without her.

Committing one bumbling mistake after another, Davis immediately gets on the wrong side of both the tyrannical gym teacher and the school bully, Gerald "the Butcher" Boggs. And he unfortunately falls in love with Gerald's girlfriend, Molly.

A number of slapstick scenes fill this light read of a book. Davis finds accidental fame as a poet, he gets beat up, he gets wet, gets sick, gets humiliated, etc. Along the way, Davis-with Molly and nerdy Edwin-form a band to challenge the Butcher's in the school's annual musical showdown. It culminates in a chaotic grand finale of dueling bands on a floating barge.

My Big Mouth is more fluff than filling, but with its song lyrics, sketches and witty hero, it makes for a fun read.

Trivia note: Author Peter Hannan is the creator of the long-running (but ended) Nickelodeon cartoon, "CatDog."
