From the opening sentence, we know we're in for a good ride. To the unnamed narrator, Marshall Armstrong is not only new, he looks different. His school supplies are different, as are his shoelaces. He's pale, reads the newspaper, and doesn't watch TV. Our narrator concludes that Marshall Armstrong's Ray Ban glasses belong to another boy.

Through spare text and witty spot-on illustration, David Mackintosh skillfully serves up the differences between the two boys. We readers aren't sure if Marshall Armstrong is just odd, or legitimately infirmed by strange allergies or illnesses.

When Marshall Armstrong invites the class to his birthday party, our narrator rattles off his protests on a page designed with "ANDs" where the intensity builds with hilarious honesty. At the party, we learn that the differences are far more intriguing than irksome.
