Review:

Beverley Naidoo and Piet Grobler present a gorgeously reimagined collection of Aesop's fables. Knowing that Aesop was probably of African origin, the pair was inspired to set their stories in the grasslands of southern Africa. The ancient morals, still powerful, seem fresh against the new setting. The illustrations manage to capture the seriousness of the lessons conveyed without being scary or unattractive. They are, in fact, beautiful. The text is easy enough for young ones to read alone. Peppered throughout are South African slang words and vocabulary from Afrikaans, isiZulu, and other languages of the continent. It's a collection that children will enjoy reading and discussing with parents and teachers.
