Review:

Let's face it. A rhinoceros is not exactly a run-of-the mill pet for an active boy. No fetching, no rolling over, no chasing a Frisbee. Dismayed by his pet's lack of interest in anything fun, our narrator did what anyone in his red cap would have done; he called a rhinoceros expert. Once the expert was assured that the rhinoceros didn't pull on his leash, attack other rhinos, or poop on the rug, she said, "So what's the problem?" "He doesn't do anything" the boy replied. "Actually," she said, "rhinoceroses only do two things. Pop balloons and poke holes in kites."

A trip to the park wasn't encouraging. Nothing was popped or poked. Maybe a hippopotamus would have been a better choice for a pet. But all ends well as the rhino foils a robbery and saves the day. Agee's quirky tale skillfully pairs text and illustration in this fresh fun story of a boy and his pet.
