Brave Irene
Spring 2012 Audio BookReview:
William Steig's classic picture book Brave Irene captivates with its tale of persistence and its charming candy-colored illustrations. Like postal workers, Irene braves fierce snow and wind to deliver her package, in this case a ball gown made by her mother for the duchess. Irene's mother is too sick to make the delivery herself, and it's Irene's love for her mom that keeps her going during her difficult journey through the storm. This set pairs the book with an audio version read by none other than three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep, whose narrative voice is rich, warm, and soothing. This is a lovely book to share with a child.

Zarina Mullan Plath has undergraduate degrees in both biology and English. Her interests include cookbooks/culinary history, South Asian literature (especially in regards to South Asians in America), and, of course, children's literature. Her poetry is included in the anthology Sweeping Beauty (U. of Iowa Press, 2005). Zarina lives in Central Illinois with her husband, two children, and assorted pets.
