Let's Go Guang! Chinese for ChildrenSpring 2012 DVD
Let's Go Guang! Chinese for Children is a collection of educational products intended to teach Mandarin Chinese as a second language to children aged two to eight. Product packaging says Let's Go Guang! relies on the aha!MethodTM for teaching foreign language, which slowly introduces children to common words and phrases and repeats them often, creating a foundation for later combining them in sentences.
This series offers exceptional packaging appeal, with a sturdy fold-out box and compartments to hold flashcards; a parent & educator guide; a children's book with audio CD; and a DVD. The DVD includes an animated feature about two children who join forces with a friendly dragon named Guang, and together they explore China's culture and history. Through dialogue and song, the trio introduces vocabulary words, carefully repeating and reinforcing pronunciation. While the script could be a bit more creative, the characters are likable enough and they never stray from their focus on foreign-language instruction.
The children's book follows a storyline similar to the animated feature but maximizes the opportunity to show vocabulary words written with Chinese characters. The book also comes with an audio CD for read-along and pronunciation practice. The set's colorful flashcards show three representations of vocabulary words, using Chinese characters, a phonetic pronunciation guide, and an English translation. Finally, the parent & educator guide includes instructions for following the aha!MethodTM, with song lyrics, pronunciation guides, and a list of vocabulary written in both English and Chinese characters. One tester said that not only did her daughter want to visit China after watching these DVDs, she also wanted to try making potstickers after seeing an instructional video in the first DVD.
For parents or teachers interested in introducing young children to a foreign-language, Let's Go Guang! Chinese for Children combines print, video, and audio lessons for upbeat instruction with maximum impact.
