The Electric Company-Feel Electric!

The Electric Company-Feel Electric!

Spring 2012 Mobile Apps
Ages: 6 - 9 yrs.
Developer: Sesame Workshop
Platform: iPad

The Electric Company - Feel Electric! is a set of games and activities for learning the vocabulary of feelings. Players select up to three mood words at application startup to express their current feeling. These can be changed each time the app is started, and the program keeps track of feelings over time in its "Moodosphere". Players can also be expressive by customizing a face (the "Mood Dude") or filling in one of several Mad Libs-style feelings stories. The app also offers a means of importing and organizing pictures, music, and videos. Also included are scenes and photos from "The Electric Company" TV show. Finally, there is a trio of vocabulary-building games, all of which are based on the theme of identifying facial expressions to match the given words.

The app feels very hip and eclectic. The songs and music are energetic. My younger child especially enjoyed watching the video clips and choosing words for her feelings, though she found the games more fast-paced than she liked. My 10-year-old genuinely enjoyed the games and, much to my surprise, really did learn a few new words. The vocabulary goes well beyond the happy/sad/angry/scared range of feelings. As a free application (and one which does NOT repeatedly nag you to purchase a not-free version), it has much to offer and could be useful for helping a child pass the time in a more constructive way than playing yet another mindless game.
