Rory's Story Cubes - ActionsSpring 2012 Games
The original Rory's Story Cubes is one of our family's top 5 games, and we could not have been more excited to add Actions cubes to the mix. These Actions cubes can be used on their own to play multiple variations of a Story Cubes game or combined with other Story Cubes sets. The set contains 9 dice illustrated with a different action on each side of the cube, offering 54 different verbs to play with. Players roll the dice and use them to create stories based on the actions that appear. Players may take turns adding on the story, ultimately making things up as they go along which often leads to hilarious tales. Although this is one suggested way to play, players can also play a solitaire version of the game or come up with their own ways of weaving stories with other players. No matter how you play, Story Cubes are one game that can truly be enjoyed by the whole family. Pre-readers will have no problems identifying actions on the cubes and all players will enjoy the challenge of creatively connecting components of the story.
Our only complaint about the new set of cubes is that the illustrations aren't always clear as to what action they are trying to portray. The original set of Story Cubes leaves more open to the imagination. For example, a star could mean many things to many different people, whereas with this set, players seemed more concerned with strictly interpreting the action on the die. There were a few images which even the adults were unclear about. All of that said, the Actions cubes were a very welcome addition to our family game night. And as with the original set, their small size means they will be making all of our family trips.
