SpeedeebeeSpring 2012 Games
Speedeebee is a fast-paced word game for children ages 8 and up, although any child who is already spelling will be able to join in on the fun. The game is packed neatly into a compact tin and includes four alphabet dice and a deck of game cards. Play begins with the youngest player selecting a card from the draw pile. Each card offers three options that challenge all of the players to either use - or not use - the letters they roll on the dice to come up with a word. For example, players might be asked to name a farm animal containing the letter rolled on the die of the current player's choice, find a word containing 2 letters shown on the red and blue dice, or to name something you don't enjoy doing starting with one of the letters shown on all 4 dice. The player who comes up with a word first wins the card. Each card has a color on the back corresponding to the three play options on the front of the cards. The player that wins the card chooses the next card from the draw pile and reads the challenge that matches the color of the back of the card they just won. Game play is over when all of the cards from the draw pile have been used and the player with the most cards wins.
The manufacturer also suggests a Freestyle version of play where players make up their own challenges and simply use the cards as a way of counting points. Our testers came up with a version of their own in which players simply took turns drawing a card which made it easier to include younger spellers who may not have been as fast to come up with words. Regardless of which version they were playing, our testers of all ages enjoyed the challenges and the speed of the game. And it's small size makes it a perfect portable pick.
