Scallywags is a pirate-filled strategy game for kids ages 8 & up, although we had players as young as 3 who did well with this game with a little adult help. To begin, a pile of gold coins are distributed in the center of the playing area, some face up with their values showing and some face down. Each player receives three cards and the player who tells the funniest pirate joke goes first. "Pirates" take turns playing cards in their hand with the goal of collecting 6 or 8 coins (depending on the total number of players in the group) and the player whose coins add up to the highest number wins. Along the way, players must use their best pirate voice to read the card that they are playing. A good Shiver Me Timbers gets coins from the middle, while a Blow Me Down has you choosing coins from the middle to give to other players. With the silliness of the game, it is easy to overlook the fact that there is a lot of strategy involved in selecting coins to keep for yourself and coins to trade or steal from other players. For ye harties in training, Scallywags is sure to be a hit.
