Born and Bred in the Great Depression tells the true story of the author's father and his ancestors during the 1930s. In their family, ten people shared a four-room home that only had two beds. There was no electricity and no indoor plumbing, as both were too expensive. Shoes were also too much money, but there were still joys to be had-fresh eggs from the chickens, a bounty of produce from the garden, and summers spent daydreaming in the woods. The story is told with tenderness and honesty, both the good and the struggle of life in the Depression. The illustrations are lovely, too, in their period details, but perhaps most interesting are the endpapers which feature photos of the actual people from the book. This is a warm and interesting text that appeals to lovers of both history and fiction.
