Letter Sounds

Fall 2012 DVD
Ages: 4 - 7 yrs.
DVD Price: $19.99

Letter Sounds is the latest installment in multiple Parents' Choice Award winner Rock 'N Learn's line of phonics and reading products. This 60-minute DVD targets children aged 4 to 7 and uses games, bright animated characters, and a tame rock and rap soundtrack to teach letter sounds and common sight words.

After reviewing the alphabet, human, animal and robot characters introduce letter sounds, and then demonstrate how to sound out simple words. The program's eleven different scenes include lessons built around reading strategies, consonant combinations, spelling, sight words, and finally, reading simple sentences. These music-laced lessons progress at a comfortable pace and use a variety of games and graphic devices to reinforce proper pronunciation, including a close-up of a mouth correctly forming each sound.

While upbeat and entertaining, Rock 'N Learn's Letter Sounds remains focused on its comprehensive phonics approach to learning, making it a useful classroom or homeschooling tool. The DVD menu offers the option to play the entire program or select certain scenes, a good option to complement your print curriculum. It also offers tuneful viewing for little ones outside the classroom, too, and with repeated viewing they'll be singing along and sounding out words for the sheer fun of it.
