Boys' Life Magazine

Fall 2012 Website
Ages: 7 - 17 yrs.
Editor: Bryan Wursten

The magazine Boys' Life, published by the Boy Scouts of America, covers fitness, technology, books, entertainment, and other topics for boys ages six to eighteen. Boys' Life's website is a great companion to the original publication's content. Its sections cover Jokes, Photos, Videos, Games, Hobbies & Projects, Outdoors & Gear, Contests, and Scouting. Boys can submit content to many of the sections. The Joke-O-Matic, hosted by the magazine's cartoon editor Pedro, is filled with readers' joke submissions. Photos also come from readers, and they emphasize physical activities and outdoor adventures.

The Video section's content will appeal widely. It includes helpful exercise videos ("How to do squats correctly"), interviews with popular YA authors (including one with Michael Scott, author of The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel), and science & technology showcases ("Scientists reveal secrets of the Titanic").

Other highlights of the Boys' Life site include the Games and the Hobbies & Projects sections. Many of the games, including Dark Dungeon and Mad Planet, are arcade style games that parents may find fun too. If kids get stuck, there's an active, anonymous, and well-moderated commenting community where they can seek help. The Hobbies and Projects section offers a ton of easy, but useful DIY projects. It provides illustrated instructions that can be downloaded as a PDF for easy printing and sharing. There are also tips for producing the best pinewood derby car possible, and a photo gallery of past pinewood derby cars.

The Boys' Life website is well-produced and provides an abundance of useful and entertaining content. Even the Outdoors & Gear page (emphasis on Gear) is thoughtfully done, providing buyer's guides and product recommendations for essential camping items. There's something here for everyone, not just boys.
