Princess Fairy Tale Maker - by Duck Duck MooseFall 2012 Mobile Apps
Princess Fairy Tale Maker by Duck Duck Moose engages children in creative play reminiscent of playing with paper dolls or stickers. It provides many background options and a whole range of characters from which users can choose to play. The app encourages storytelling, too, by providing a tool that records sound and the movement of characters.
With younger users the vast range of options might be overwhelming, and at first it might actually inhibit creativity and play. For older users, the range of character options and the ability to create a story and video with audio using the characters lead to fun and creative results. Adults may want to supervise initial use of the app to guide younger children toward storytelling, since without guidance our young testers overlooked the app's storytelling features and spent most of their time on the trying every character option.
The app also includes coloring pages. These were fun for younger and older users. The rainbow crayon tool was a huge hit with girls, because it gave a random color each time a new line was drawn. Creative options like that one distinguish this app from similar ones.
Princes Fairy Tale Maker is very cute, user friendly for all suggested ages, and a nice use of the iPad's technology that expands creativity in a new way. For a more gender neutral drawing and storytelling app from Duck Duck Moose, try Draw & Tell.
