Review:

Both our 3- and 5-year-old testers were able to easily understand the premise of the game Who Shook Hook?, which is to nab a treasure from Captain Hook's bounty without "waking" him up. The challenge is that Captain Hook is sleeping in a delicate hammock with his treasures spread out around him. Each player has to spin to move around the board and the space they land on determines how they will attempt to retrieve a piece of loot. The space either specifies which tool to use (tweezers, fishing pole, sword, or shovel) or which piece of loot to attempt to steal. While my boys caught on to the concept of how to play, the execution was a bit of a challenge. Captain Hook's hammock is extremely sensitive to any movement and if it tips, which it often did, the game is over and the player with the most loot wins. Quite often in our tester's house this happened very early on in the game before anyone had scored any treasures. At first this led to frustration, but the children did not let this stop them from wanting to play the game again. Quickly they came up with their own way to play.

While testers said that their children did attempt to play this pirate game by the rules, they often spent more time pretend-playing with the figures and the illustrations on the board rather than actually playing as designed. As testers said, however, so long as their children are having fun and enjoying this game, that's fine.
