Mia and the MigooFall 2012 DVD
Named Best Animated Feature at the European Film Awards, Mia and the Migoo is an animated French film from 2008. It's been released on DVD as an English-language version boasting the powerhouse voice talents of Whoopie Goldberg, James Wood, and Wallace Shawn. The film is rated PG for intense situations, although all are appropriate for a tween and young teen audience.
In this 91-minute feature, young Mia takes on the Herculean task of trying to rescue her father. He's trapped by a landslide at a remote construction site and Mia's journey to rescue him brings her in contact with the ancient Tree of Life and forest spirits called the Migoo. The Migoo also are in need of help and call on Mia to help them battle unprincipled developers who want to turn their tropical paradise into a hotel resort.
The absorbing story will have viewers rooting for strong-minded and capable Mia - but don't expect a Disney-fied treatment of this familiar plot. The storytelling techniques in Mia and the Magoo have a decidedly European flare, with a deeper and darker tone than most animated action films released in the U.S., but it's all still perfectly accessible for U.S. kids and a worthy viewing experience that may even help to broaden their film tastes.
This DVD also includes a bonus feature describing the film's animation, which is made up of over 500,000 hand-painted frames; and an interview with the film's director, Jacques-Rémy Girerd.
