Review:

Songs, poems and music old and new are served up in tasty tidbits by professional Tennessee Performing Arts Center teaching artists on the album Give Yourself a High Five. Expert musicians, writers, singers and storytellers use their talents to engage children in learning through the arts. Lively diverse rhythms, exciting percussion and catchy melodies invite listeners to get moving; clever lyrics paint colorful mind pictures. Some songs are inspired by familiar fairytales ("Little Red Riding Hood") and nursery rhymes ("Listen to Your Mama, Humpty!"). Some humorously convey messages about healthy eating ("Sugar Slump") and healthy habits ("You Brush Your Teeth"). In Rachel Sumner's jazzy "Little Miss Muffet," the spider is a welcome garden guest, while a cool upright bass and trombone duo propel Lattie Brown's "GoGoGo" ("I want to go from here to there"). Instrumental highlights: an excerpt from Grieg's Norwegian Dance No. 2 and a sprightly snippet from Ezra Jenkinson' "Elves Dance" (both performed by violinist Jocelyn Sprouse). And percussionist Dann Sherrill's wordless "A Walk Through the Rainforest" draws listeners into an evocative soundscape sure to fire up any young explorer's imagination.
