Picasso, That's Who! (And So Can You!)Fall 2012 Music
Hope Harris, a veteran of the professional musical stage (Broadway, off Broadway, regional theaters), follows her 2011 Silver Award-winning CD, Cousins Jamboree, with a smart and tuneful visit to the world of art and creativity inspired by Jackson Pollock, Picasso, David Hockney, Grandma Moses, Alexander Calder, Georgia O'Keeffe, Paul Klee, Romare Bearden, Matisse, and Monet. Harris' resonant lyrics deftly observe the artists' diverse works, tell a story, and encourage listeners' own creative efforts. "See the bold, bright colors of flowers/See the glow of mountain peaks/See the beauty of the desert/See a painting by Georgia O'Keeffe," she sings. On another track, Harris sings, "I wanna paint like Jackson Pollock/I wanna free color from the line/I wanna paint like Jackson Pollock/I wanna drip it, drizzle, flick it all the time." By the time you get to Harris' soft and sweet "Impression, Monet" chorus, you're ready to pick up a paintbrush, a pencil or a pair of scissors yourself. Harris brings her message home on the last track: "Paint a Picture, Too" ("Don't miss the chance to try/To sing a song/To dance a dance/To paint a picture, too").
Harris, an expressive vocal stylist, frames each song with just the right complementary melody. She's joined by several fine musicians, including Rob Friedman, co-producer for Dan Zanes' family albums, who adds his top-flight professional touch as producer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist.
