Review:

Myra is a new girl in class, and the teacher seats her beside Chloe. When Myra smiles tentatively at Chloe, the latter turns away for reasons Myra cannot fathom. This pattern of behavior, once started, continues. As Chloe plays with her friends Kendra and Sophie, the girls reject every overture of Myra wanting to play. Kendra declares a new name for Myra. She calls her "Never New," because of Kendra's ever-shabby clothes. The girls laugh and turn away. Finally, Myra quits making friendly overtures and plays alone on the playground-until one day she disappears from school altogether. The teacher informs the class that Myra's family has moved away. Told in the first person from the point-of-view of a bully-a rarity in picture books-this story could have become preachy in the hands of a less empathetic author. Instead, it resonates and promotes empathy for both the bullied and the bully. The exquisite, softly outlined, realistic watercolor illustrations by E.B. Lewis perfectly capture the pensive mood of this unusual but important picture book.
