Life-Size FarmFall 2012 Picture Books
Once again, Teruyuki Komiya wows readers with his Life-Size series. The author of Life-Size Zoo, More Life-Size Zoo, and Life-Size Aquarium now offers Life-Size Farm, which features life-size, high-resolution images of nineteen farm animals.
The book's concept is refreshingly simple and well-executed. Children can examine a pony's big front teeth, a turkey's iridescent feathers, and a pig's wrinkled snout. Larger animals like horses and cows are displayed on giant foldout spreads that are wider than a toddler's arm span. The book offers useful text alongside its gorgeous photos. Each page shares the name, age, sex, scientific name, and home of the animal shown. Below that, the "Time for a Close-Up" section explores the physical features of the animal shown. This includes an explanation of the features used to tag and identify farm animals. A duck has a tag around her leg, and a pig has a hole clipped in her ear. Finally, small cartoons on each page provide information about each animal's behavior and how it should be approached for petting and holding.
Both young children who have yet to visit a farm or petting zoo and older children who have long outgrown picture books will appreciate Life-Size Zoo and its stunning images.
