The Last Dogs: The Vanishing is an excellent start to a four-book series. Max, a yellow Labrador, wakes up one morning locked in his kennel at the Vet's. It's not entirely unusual - his people leave him here every so often when they go away - but this time something is off. The other dogs are gone, there's none of the hustle and bustle he's accustomed to hearing in the office, and no one has given him food or water for days.

Thirsty and weak, he manages to work free of his cage to find that the humans-and dogs-have disappeared, leaving behind Max and a wise-cracking Dachshund named Rocky. Before they can make sense of any of it, life-threatening danger attacks in the form of hungry, teeth-gnashing wolves, forcing these domesticated pets to go on the run in a wild and unruly world. They pick up a female terrier named Gizmo on the way, to round out their plucky group.

On its surface, The Last Dogs is a classic adventure tale-three brave friends and a journey-but there are bigger themes here, too. It soon becomes clear the dogs are in a dystopian apocalypse where the "Corporation"-a socialist society run by an evil Doberman-is their new world's biggest threat.

The characters in this book are so well-developed, it's easy to forget that they are animals. From the dogs and stray cats to subway rats, there are believable heroes, villains and innocents. A steady stream of danger, mystery and triumph keep this story engaging and the ending will leave readers eagerly awaiting book two, out next year.
